About CERS
The Centre for Environmental Research and Studies (CERS) was established by Jazan University in 2010. It is located at the College of Science under the supervision of the Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research. It aims to promote basic and applied science and international cooperative work in the field of ecology. This is to provide an academic unit within the University that would foster the institution's goal of discovery and dissemination of critical knowledge to the community of Jazan which has a population of a million and a half in an area of 16000 square kilometers. The Centre is to serve as a research and advisory asset to the Jazan community. The most vital goal of the Centre is to carry out a high standard of interdisciplinary science and long term environmental monitoring by integrated research activities in terrestrial and marine ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere employing the highest level of modern technology to assist in the identification of ecologically related problems and avenues for resolution in Jazan. Therefore, the Centre represents an opportunity for the University of Jazan to be a leading force in environmental studies to achieve its aims. In so doing, Jazan University can provide a model for others to follow regionally and worldwide. Projects will involve numerous investigators who will focus on many areas of science (e.g. Regional contributions will include works that focus on understanding the biodiversity of the area and the impact of proposed activities on the quality of life within the area.).
The Centre consists of a number of research units which focus their activities on the problem of pollution its adverse effects and treatment, the use of advanced techniques to address ecological issues, and assessments of rare and endangered plants and animals at several sites in south western Saudi Arabia. There will be assessment and survey of significant biota within the surroundings of a sewage treatment plant in Jazan, and identification, survey and development of a checklist for plants and animals of the aquatic and terrestrial habitats of Jazan. Last but not least the Centre will do reseach to enhance, encourage, and deal with all the obstacles to environmental tourism and give good attention to the importance of tourism.
