PREFACE

Consumption of khat (Catha edulis Forsk) is spreading in several countries including Saudi Arabia. The consumption of khat is believed to be associated with many health and socio-economic impacts in this region. SARC (Substance Abuse Research Center) at Jazan University carries out research in the areas of prevention, biomedical, clinical, and surveys in the area of substance abuse and its effect on the health of the individuals and community. Moreover SARC supports research that seeks to identify factors that put people at increased risk of drug abuse like consumption of khat, amphetamine, and smoking and thus protect them. The support of the Centre by the Minister of Higher Education and the Rector of the University, will lead to accelerate research discoveries in this area. The (SARC) also provides scientific information which will support making informed decisions on issues of substances abuse. The results will lead to more effective strategies seek primarily to protect youth from substance use as proactive measures. The promising work and achievement of the center will have a significant impact on reducing the consequences of the substances abuse on the public health and community development.

There are many gaps in khat research which has to be addressed in details. Scientists around Saudi Arabia are seriously doing research on some of these gaps, but independently. Bringing these scientists under one roof will ignite new ideas and strengthen the research together with speedy outputs. Since new data in biomedical research will strengthen the khat prevention campaigns alongside reinforce the law. This seminar is organized by the Biomedical research unit of SARC to make a new hub for concerned scientists to collaborate and implement their work more productively

.

   Objectives

To create national networking of khat research entities

.    To discuss the latest research on pharmacology, toxicology and abuse of khat

3.    To create a platform for a direct interaction between scientists and researchers to identify areas of overlapping research interests and potential fields of collaboration.
